In a game that was tied at halftime, the Cougars (1-2) battled back in the fourth quarter, getting 20 points from Rico Handy.

Kainalu Kahapea scored points for Kamehameha and Isaiah Ignacio had 10 as the Warriors avoided an 0-2 start. Patrick Mears added 10 for Keaau.

In JV, Kamehameha won 40-38.

Hilo 44, Kealakehe 37

Issac Lui scored 14 points to lead the Vikings to a road victory against the Waveriders, who were playing their season-opener.

Lawrence Padasdao and Liko Medeiros each added seven for Hilo (2-0).

Bryton Lewi scored 10 of his team-high 14 points after the half, but it wouldn’t be enough for the Waveriders to overcome a 3 point first quarter.

Kohala 68, St. Joseph 54

Mark Francisco scored 22 points as the visiting Cowboys rallied for a season-opening win that could hold big playoff significance later in the season.

John Nicholas chipped in with 13 points and Elijah Antonio added 12 for Kohala, which missed the BIIF Division II semifinals last season.

The defending league D-II champion Cardinals are off to an 0-2 start. Manato Fukuda (18 points) and Keegan Scanlan (17) led St. Joe, which raced out to a 21-9 lead after the first quarter but scored only 19 points in the second half.

Kohala won the JV game 32-24.

Honokaa 52, Ka’u 22

Koa Callihan scored 14 points in Pahala to lead the Dragons, who also got double-digit scoring outputs from Kelvin Falk (11) and Kamuela Spencer-Herring (10).

The Trojans fell behind 19-1 after the first quarter. Janslae Badua led Ka’u (0-2) with six points.
