Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center’s “Tools to Transform Conflict” training series continues with a workshop from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Jan. 14 at Hawaii Community College conducted by certified mediator Kimberly Dark.
The workshop, titled “Conflict Resolution: Reframing Problems in Order to Generate Solutions,” focuses on understanding and practicing the skill of reframing contentious, position-based statements into neutral language that helps everyone think more clearly and develop possible solutions.
“We’ll begin by examining the causes of conflict and how language can help individuals avoid conflict in a variety of settings,” Dark said. “Then we’ll focus on turning complaints into issue — the skill of reframing and paraphrasing.”
Dark says these skills can be used at home as well as in the workplace, schools, associations, meetings and more.
“This workshop is perfect for managers, business leaders and HR professionals; human services staff and case workers; educators, parents and others who work with young people; problem-solvers, meeting facilitators and mediators; and community members who want to understand and better handle conflict in everyday settings,” Dark explained.
Dark has consulted in conflict resolution and facilitation for more than 20 years. She completed mediator certification with the National Conflict Resolution Center, served on the advisory board of San Diego Mediation Center Community Justice and served as principal for Current Change Consulting, which specialized in community facilitation, training and group conflict resolution. A sociologist, she currently writes, teaches and performs worldwide.
The “Conflict Resolution” workshop tuition is $50 (group discounts and partial scholarships available). To register, contact Jenifer Aveiro at Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center at 935-7844, ext. 1, or jenifer@hawaiimediation.org.
Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center’s “Tools to Transform Conflict” Training Series is made possible thanks in part to funding from the Hawaii County Department of Research and Development.
