Police suspect arson in fatal blaze
HONOLULU (AP) — One man died in a Honolulu house fire police suspect was intentionally set early Monday.
Firefighters responded to the blaze and found the victim, who has not been identified, dead in the living room of the multistory home. Several others there when the fire broke out were able to escape uninjured.
Honolulu Police Department Lt. Phillip Lavarias said a 58-year-old suspect also was at the home and tried leaving before being detained by firefighters until police arrived. He faces murder and arson charges.
Lavarias said witnesses reported seeing the suspect pour flammable liquid in one of the bedrooms.
Damage to the home is estimated at about $240,000. The property has eight different units.
The owners of the residence face nearly $16,000 in fines related to the number of people living on the property. The city said in a notice issued in March that there is a six-unit, multifamily dwelling on the property occupied by a family and 11 other people.
Property owner Cipriana Luczon said she was unaware of the violations.
Ex-officer jailed for exposing himself
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — A former Maui police officer suspected of sexually exposing himself to women and a child in public was sentenced to 60 days in jail.
John Salomon, 41, was sentenced after pleading no contest to sexual assault charges in connection with the incidents that took place May 30, 2015.
Police said they received several calls about a man exposing himself and touching himself inappropriately at various Pukalani parking lots. Salomon was a three-year veteran of the police force when he was tied to the crimes.
Salomon apologized to the victim’s families during his Friday sentencing and said he felt “disgusted and ashamed.”
Second Circuit Judge Richard Bissen denied the defendant’s request to keep the convictions off his record. The judge also ordered Salomon to serve one year of probation and receive sex offender treatment.
