HOPE Services Hawaii is seeking volunteers to help with this year’s Homeless Point in Time Count.
The annual weeklong count aims to gauge the island’s current homeless population. Volunteers help count homeless individuals throughout the island over the course of the week, slated this year for Jan. 23 to Jan. 27.
The number of homeless people on the island has steadily increased in recent years. Last year, volunteers counted 1,394 homeless people islandwide, up from 1,241 the year prior. Statewide the homeless tally increased from 7,620 in 2015 to 7,921 last year.
Those interested in helping with this year’s count can attend a volunteer training workshop today from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Kinoole Plaza, located at 1990 Kinoole St., Existing Housing Division, Conference Room, Suite 104.
The event will include an overview of the effort and provide training.
