Hawaii Island Adult Care has a full lineup scheduled for its first respite day for caregivers of 2017 from 9 a.m.-
noon Saturday at 34 Rainbow Drive in Hilo.
There will be special presentations by Hospice of Hilo’s Lani Weigert, Tribune-Herald food columnist Audrey Wilson and Zumba instructor Yoli Nakamura.
Weigert will introduce the new Kupu Palliative Care Program and give important tips on how to recover from, and hopefully steer clear of, “caregiver burnout.”
“Caring for an older adult or family member with a long-term illness can be rewarding. But it’s also hard work and it can cause people to feel run down, depressed and even sick,” Weigert said.
Weigert will share insight and experience that can make the difference in a caregiver’s life. One of the most important things to avoid, she says, is isolation.
In a world where choices between food that heals and food that hurts aren’t always as clear as we’d like, Wilson will share her own tips on health and empowerment through basic food knowledge.
To promote fitness, Nakamura will energize the new year with some irresistible Zumba moves that you can try at home.
People can RSVP or drop in.
“It’s our first caregiver respite of the year and to make sure everyone gets a chance to relax we now have three amazingly talented and dedicated massage therapists standing by,” said Lizby Logsdon, HIAC community outreach specialist. “Most importantly, you will get to meet and share with other family caregivers.”
HIAC offers free adult day care during the respite activities. For more information and to RSVP, call 961-3747, ext 101, or email hiac@hawaiiislandadultcare.org.
