During the week of Jan. 16-22, Hawaii Island police arrested 32 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.

During the week of Jan. 16-22, Hawaii Island police arrested 32 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 19; South Hilo, six: Puna, three; South Kohala, two; Hamakua and Ka‘u, one each.

So far this year, there have been 90 DUI arrests compared to 63 during the same period last year, an increase of 42.9 percent.

There have been 80 major accidents so far this year compared to 92 during the same period last year, a decrease of 13 percent.

So far this year, there have been three official fatal crashes on Hawaii Island, resulting in three official fatalities, compared with no fatal crashes during the same period last year. Another fatal crash that occurred Saturday on Highway 11 was within the boundaries of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, so police do not count it toward the official total.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
