More than 5,000 gallons of untreated sewage spilled from a Paukaa pump station Tuesday.
Hawaii County Department of Environmental Management officials said the discharge was caused by abnormally high flows from heavy rainfall.
About 250 gallons spilled into the ground, while another 5,000 gallons were released to the shoreline.
The surrounding area was disinfected and washed down, according to the department.
Warning signs in nearby shoreline areas will be posted through the weekend.
