A forest could be reborn on Hawaii Island with the help of carbon credits.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources selected the Pu‘u Mali restoration area for its first carbon forestry project.
On Friday, the Land Board approved the issuance of a request for proposals for the effort, which would allow private entities to support to offset emissions.
The area is located in the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve. Without such a program, reforestation could cost $5.3 million.
