William Edward Smith, 71, of Volcano died Nov. 23 at home. Born in Pittsburgh, he was a retired district court judge. Services held. No flowers or koden (monetary gifts). Survived by husband, Wade Park of Volcano; son, Walter Andrew (Toni) Smith of Baltimore; brothers, Gary Smith and Michael Smith of Honolulu; hanai mother, Mary Kastner of Torrington, Wyo.; hanai sister, Susan Smith of Torrington; one grandson. Mana Mae Venable, 94, of Hilo died Jan. 26. She was a retired transportation clerk for the U.S. Army at Kilauea Military Reservation, seasonal worker H&R Block, U.S. Marine Corps Women’s Reserve veteran, member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Lutheran Womens Missionary League and square dancer. Visitation 9-10 a.m. Friday (Feb. 3) at Christ Lutheran Church, 595 Kapiolani St. in Hilo. Funeral service at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Survived by husband, Jackson Venable; sons, Robert Venable of Seward, Alaska, and James (Carla) Venable of Mountain View; companion, Norman Sletteland of Hilo; three stepgrandsons.
