Island libraries closed Wednesday

All Hawaii Island public libraries will be closed Wednesday for Library Institute Day 2017.

Book drops will remain open.

Library staff will attend a one-day workshop to receive training on statewide initiatives and techniques on improving patron experiences.

Hawaii Island public libraries will resume their normal hours of public service after Wednesday.

St. Joseph School hosting open house

St. Joseph School, with students in preschool to 12th grade, is hosting a free open house from 1-3 p.m. Feb. 12.

The open house will include tours of the classrooms and campus guided by students. Principal Llewellyn Young along with faculty and staff will be available for questions.

“We offer a quality education in a safe environment with caring teachers,” Young said. “Come visit us and see why we’re ranked in the top 10 private schools in the state.”

Financial aid and discounts are available. The school is located at 999/1000 Ululani St. in Hilo.

Blues by the bay with Larry Dupio

Big Island native Larry Dupio, after living in the Pacific Northwest for 10 years, brings a variety of the blues back to his hometown of Hilo with a performance at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Kukuau Studio, 43D Kukuau St. across from Ben Franklin.

Cost is $7 at the door, $5 with a nonperishable item that will be donated to the Hawaii Island Food Bank.

‘Sail With Whales’ to benefit WHCHC

Community residents and visitors are invited to the fourth annual “Sail With The Whales” Feb. 12 and March 12 to benefit the West Hawaii Community Health Center.

The two-hour whale-watch adventures aboard the Ocean Sports luxury catamaran takes off from Kawaihae Harbor at 12:30 p.m. Check-in time is noon. During the cruise, guests will enjoy the sounds of Hawaiian music from award-winning slack-key guitarist John Keawe.

Zen workshop offered at UHH

The College of Continuing Education and Community Service at the University of Hawaii at Hilo is offering a free presentation about Zen meditation from 6:45-8 p.m. Tuesday in the UH-Hilo Old Gym.

The presentation is designed for anyone interested in learning more about Zen or who has some meditation experience and is curious about Zen practice.

Instructor is Don Stoddard, who has guided Zen groups on Hawaii Island since 2002.
