During the week of Jan. 30-Feb. 5, Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, eight; Puna, seven; South Hilo; two; North Hilo and South Kohala, one each.
So far this year, there have been 134 DUI arrests compared with 97 during the same period last year, an increase of 38.1 percent.
There have been 138 major accidents so far this year compared with 138 during the same period last year.
So far this year, there have been four official traffic fatalities, compared to no fatal crashes during the same period last year. In addition, there are two fatalities this year that aren’t on the official list because one occurred on a private road and the other in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
