Alleged car thief appears in court

A 33-year-old Kurtistown man who turned himself in Wednesday after being the subject of two wanted bulletins appeared Thursday in Hilo District Court after being charged with unauthorized control of a stolen vehicle.

Shannon Kaleo Navor appeared in custody in lieu of $10,000 bail on the charge. His court-appointed attorney, Gary Zamber, requested the bail in that case be absorbed into bail he’s facing on three counts of probation revocation, “otherwise it’s impossible for him to make a bail situation.”

Deputy Prosecutor Winston Albright asked Judge Harry Freitas to maintain Navor’s bail. He noted police issued the first public bulletin seeking leads from the public on Navor’s whereabouts on Jan. 23.

“We’ll note that there are three pending felony (probation) revocations and … this crime was allegedly committed during a time of intermittent jail for these felonies,” Albright said. He said the convictions were for second-degree theft, promoting a dangerous drug and possession of drug paraphernalia, all Class C felonies carrying a maximum five-year prison term upon conviction.

According to a court document filed by police, Navor was spotted by an officer on Jan. 19 driving a stolen blue BMW sport-utility vehicle stolen in Waimea on Jan. 7. The same document states a woman, identified as Kodi Familar, told police she was a passenger in the SUV and Navor told her it was stolen.

Police also booked Navor on suspicion of first-degree theft, but haven’t filed that charge.

Freitas ordered Navor to appear for a preliminary hearing at 2 p.m. Monday.
