For the second consecutive year, BIIF champion Waiakea was given the the No. 4 seed at the HHSAA Division I boys basketball championships.
After coming out on the winning end of a classic finish against Konawaena in the league final, the Warriors’ rewarded could be a quarterfinal against defending state champion Iolani.
The ILH runner-up Red Raiders host a first-round game Monday against Moanalua with the winner advancing to face Waiakea at 5 p.m. Wednesday at McKinley High School in Honolulu.
The Warriors went 0-2 at states last season, with losses to Kaiser and Baldwin. Waiakea’s last win at states came in its most recent appearance before last year, a 2014 consolation victory against Moanalua.
A BIIF team hasn’t won in the winners bracket since Konawaena reached the semefinals in 2013.
On the other side of the 12-team bracket, the Wildcats play Kailua of the OIA at 5:30 p.m. Monday in Kealakekua, with the winner moving on to face second-seeded Punahou at Radford High in Honolulu. The ILH champion Buffanblu were state runner-up last season.
OIA champion Kahuku is the top seed and will face either Maui or Kalaheo in the quarterfinals, and No. 3 Lahainaluna waits for either Kapolei of Leilehua.
