The numbers weren’t on UH-Hilo’s side at Academy of Art. The short-handed Vulcans suited up only seven players Thursday, and one of them, Parker Farris, went through a rough shooting night.

Playing without Ryley Callaghan, UH-Hilo limps to its season finale after a 74-67 loss to the Urban Knights in San Francisco.

Brian Ishola nearly registered another double-double for the Vulcans (9-16, 7-12 PacWest) with 17 points and nine rebounds, but Farris finished with 14 points – eight below his average – and had his coldest shooting night of the season. Just two days after posting a career-high 39 points at Holy Names, the senior guard was just 2 of 16 from the field as the Vulcans shot 35 percent – and just 6 of 29 in the second half.

Callaghan, the team’s third-leading scorer, was injured at the end of Tuesday’s game at Holy Names, and the school listed him questionable for Saturday’s game at Dominican.

Farris’ only 3-pointer came late in the first half as part of a 25-10 run that gave UH-Hilo a 39-31 lead at halftime.

But after Ishola’s three-point play gave the Vulcans an 11-point lead, the wheels fell off.

Academy of Art (7-18, 6-13) had five players score in double figures.

Randan Berinobis contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds and Arnold Silva went for 11 points and six rebounds.

In contrast to Farris, the UH-Hilo women’s leading scorer, Kim Schmelz, was on point, scoring a career-high 29 points.

But she didn’t have enough help, ensuring the Vulcans (8-14, 8-11) will finish with a losing conference record.

The Urban Knights (16-11, 12-7) won their third in row to stay in the thick of playoff contention, allowing UH-Hilo to shoot just 32.p percent and holding a 51-32 rebounding advantage.

Schmelz shot 12 of 23 with five 3-pointers, scoring 12 of her points in the final 2:37. Asia Smith added 11 points and 15 rebounds.

“We battled back and made it a two-possession game,” coach David Kaneshiro said, “but we basically ran out of time.”
