WHS juniors hosting fair

Waiakea High School’s class of 2018 will host its annual Junior Country Fair from 7 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday at the school’s cafeteria.

The fair will feature a rummage sale, silent auction, plant sale, craft fair vendors, live entertainment, catch-a-koi pond, carnival games and a concession. Those who purchased pre-sale Cookie Corner fundraiser tickets can redeem them from 7-11 a.m.

All monies raised will go toward paying for upcoming senior year expenses.

Master to lead flute workshop

The College of Continuing Education and Community Service at the University of Hawaii at Hilo is offering a free presentation and workshop on Japanese bamboo flutes with Marco Lienhard, master of shakuhachi, from noon-3 p.m. Monday in the main hall of UH-Hilo’s College of Hawaiian Language.

Light refreshments will be served.

Registration is required because of limited seating. Parking passes are required and must be purchased at the main gate of the UH-Hilo campus.

Soprano coming to UH-Hilo PAC

Award-winning soprano Rachel Schutz, accompanied by her husband, pianist Jonathan Korth, and clarinetist James Moffitt, will sing a wide range of vocal chamber music at 7:30 p.m. March 12 at the University of Hawaii at Hilo Performing Arts Center.

Tickets for the performance are $25 (general), $20 (60 and older) and $10 (students) and are available at The Most Irresistible Shop, Music Exchange and the UH-Hilo Performing Arts Center box office. Remaining tickets will be available at the door after 6:45 p.m.

HPA book club to meet March 9

The Hawaii Preparatory Academy Community Book Club will meet at 7 p.m. March 9 in the Dyer Memorial Library, Upper Campus.

The book club meetings are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served and participants are invited to bring a snack to share.

Dyer librarian Lois Inman and Upper School English teacher Jaime Johnson will lead the group. The current book selection is New York Times best-seller “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis” by J.D. Vance.
