Hawaii Pacific seniors Connor Looney and Chauncey Orr sparked the No. 6 Sharks to the PacWest Tournament Championship with a 96-90 win over cross-own rival Chaminade in the semifinals on Friday at Concordia University Arena.
The Sharks (27-2) shot better than 50 percent from the floor to overcome the 96 percent foul shooting by the Silverswords (18-11).
Looney collected 23 points for the Sharks, while Orr recorded his ninth double-double of the year with 22 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Rhondell Goodwin led the Swords with 25 points, while Austin Pope had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The Sharks advance to the championship against Point Loma, which upset No. 8 California Baptist 72-69 in the other semifinal.
Women
Point Loma defeated No. 3 Hawaii Pacific 90-77 in a semifinal.
Hawai’i Pacific’s Gabriella Fotu led the Sharks with 21 points, including three 3-pointers. VeAnne Navarro also had three from behind the arc and added a total of 17 points.
Wazzu falls
In the quarterfinals at the Pac-12 Tournament, Stanford overwhelmed Washington State 66-36 to advance to the semifinals at KeyArena in Seattle.
The No. 7 seed Cougars (12-19) missed injured freshman guard Chanelle Molina and suffered from cold shooting, hitting a season-low 25 percent (16 of 65) from the field, including 0 for 16 from deep.
The No. 2 seed Cardinal (26-5) raced out to a 21-0 cushion seven minutes into the game while Wazzu missed its first 11 shots.
The dearth of outside shooting marked the first time since 2012 WSU was held without a 3-point field goal. Senior Ivana Kmetovska was the lone Coug to reach double-figures in scoring with 10 points on 5-of-15 shooting.
