Michael James Garland, 56, of Keaau died Feb. 28 at home. He was a world-renowned poet, president of the World Union of Poets and WUP Gold Medal of Honor award recipient, artist and musician. Scattering of ashes at a later date. Survived by sisters, Sheri (Michael) Shaw of Texas and Susan (Porky) England (Porky) of California; brother, Roland (Jennifer) Dale of Louisiana; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Jack K. Odani Sr., 75, of Hilo died Feb. 24 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired park caretaker and a retired U.S. Army reserve sergeant 1st class.
