HONOLULU (AP) — The Honolulu Fire Department is investigating a two-alarm fire at an emergency homeless shelter.
Fire officials responded Friday to a fire at the Onelauena Emergency Shelter. When they arrived, a unit within the barracks-type structure was emanating smoke and flames.
No one was in the unit at the time of the fire. The building’s occupants were alerted by an alarm system and evacuated without issue.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Hawaii’s top federal prosecutor asked to resign
HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Justice Department says Florence T. Nakakuni, Hawaii’s top federal attorney, is among 46 U.S. attorneys appointed by former President Barack Obama who was asked to leave their posts as part of the transition to the new Trump administration.
Nakakuni was appointed to lead the federal District of Hawaii office in September 2009. She previously worked as an assistant U.S. attorney in Hawaii since 1985, serving most recently as chief of the Organized Crime and Narcotics Section in the Criminal Division for four years.
Kauai solar farm partners with Tesla to boost capacity
LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — A Kauai utility increased its renewable energy generation to more than 40 percent thanks to Tesla batteries.
Kauai Island Utility Cooperative boosted its solar capacity by connecting Tesla Powerpacks to the solar farm north of Lihue. The two companies hosted a blessing ceremony Wednesday for the 13-megawatt solar system.
“Storage is a challenge for us here in Hawaii,” Gov. David Ige said during the ceremony. “… Renewable energy sources are the future and we’re committed to making that happen.”
The Tesla Powerpacks store enough power to service 4,500 homes during peak night demand with storage of 52 megawatts of power. Before connecting the powerpacks, Kauai’s grid reached the maximum amount of solar power it could take.
Tesla is contracted to sell the energy produced at the facility to KIUC for 13.9 cents a kilowatt-hour throughout the next 20 years.
The Tesla facility is estimated to reduce Kauai’s fossil fuel use by 1.6 million gallons of diesel annually.
KIUC has another solar and storage system in the works and signed a contract for one nearly twice the size of the Tesla facility earlier this year.
