During the week of March 13-19, Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
Seven of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were:
• Kona, 14.
• Puna and South Hilo, four each.
• Hamakua, South Kohala and Ka‘u, one each.
So far this year, there have been 280 DUI arrests compared with 251 during the same period last year, an increase of 11.6 percent.
There have been 293 major accidents so far this year compared with 317 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.6 percent.
To date, there have been five official traffic fatalities, the same number as for this time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
There also have been three fatalities on the Big Island that do not count toward the official total because two occurred on private property and the other in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
