Police have charged two men in connection with a burglary that occurred Monday night in the Waiakea Uka area of Hilo.

Police have charged two men in connection with a burglary that occurred Monday night in the Waiakea Uka area of Hilo.

The 37-year-old homeowner reported that while remotely checking his video surveillance on his cellphone, he saw a man in his garage taking his backpack. When the resident got home, he found his home had been entered, several items were missing and the suspect was gone.

The victim told police the suspect and two other men returned and confronted him but left before officers arrived. He was able to provide a license plate number and a description of the vehicle and its occupants.

Officers found and stopped the vehicle and two suspects were taken into custody.

On Wednesday, 48-year-old Charles Mather of Hilo was charged with first-degree burglary, first- and second-degree theft, unauthorized entry to a motor vehicle, and ownership possession prohibited.

Mather was released after posting $17,500 bail.

The second suspect, 43-year-old Charles Aiona of Keaau, was charged with first-degree burglary and three counts each of of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Aiona was also released after posting $26,000 bail.
