Way back on Feb. 7, UH-Hilo’s softball team beat Western New Mexico University in both ends of a doubleheader, and it’s a feeling the Vulcans might not be familiar with anymore.

Sweeps have been hard to come by since.

Middle-of-the order hitters Bailey Gaspar and Cristina Menjivar powered UH-Hilo to an 11-10 victory Sunday, but Academy of Art came back and won 5-2 in Brisbane, Calif., as the teams split for the second consecutive day.

Menjivar’s two-run single in the first game broke a tie game in the seventh as the Vulcans (11-15, 5-11 Pacific West Conference) cranked out 12 hits to make up for subpar pitching performances from starter Leah Gonzales and Billi Derleth in relief.

Gaspar (4 for 5) hit a solo home run and doubled and scored five runs, Menjivar was 4-for-5 and drove in three runs and the Vulcans took advantage of 10 walks.

Danielle Wilson (5-7) gave up a run in the seventh but held on for victory, working 1 2/3 innings of relief, but she was also 1-1 on the day.

With UH-Hilo looking for its first sweep in eight conference doubleheaders, the Urban Knights (14-16, 8-10) scored four times in the second against Wilson, and the Vulcans left 13 runners on base.

UH-Hilo scored both of its runs in the third. Kristen Ishii (2 for 4) led off with a single and scored on a triple by Mari Kawano (2 for 4), who came home on Gaspar’s single to make it 4-2.

The Vulcans stranded two runners on bases, and they left the bags full in the fourth and fifth. Maria Steadmon collected two of UH-Hilo’s nine hits.

Wilson pitched all six innings, yielding 10 hits, five runs (three earned), with four walks and strikeout.
