The Hawaii Island Palm Society welcomes Don Hemmes, professor emeritus of biology at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, during its the next meeting at 7 p.m. Friday in UCB 100 at the UH-Hilo campus.
Hemmes illustrated presentation is titled “Biodiversity in the Upper Tributaries of the Amazon River in Peru.” The event is free and open to the public.
Hemmes is a past president of the palm society and has been widely published in periodicals and journals. He also co-authored a field guide titled “Mushrooms of Hawaii.”
Having recently traveled to Iquitos, Peru, Hemmes will give attendees an “armchair tour” of the biodiversity on the Amazon River.
The meeting is an opportunity to join the palm society and learn more about the upcoming summer garden tours of private palm gardens that begin in June. Membership for two adults in a household is $15 per year.
As an incentive to join, a free palm will be given away for each new membership.
