DOJ seeks speedy appeal in Hawaii travel ban case
HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Department of Justice filed a motion Friday asking the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to expedite its appeal in the travel ban case in Hawaii.
In motion, the government challenges a ruling in Hawaii that put an indefinite hold on President Donald Trump’s revised executive order to suspend new visas for people in six Muslim-majority countries and halt the U.S. refugee program.
Hawaiians claim ownership of land
LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — Owners of the Coco Palms resort on Kauai are working to remove residents they say have been living on the property illegally.
Noa Mau-Espirito, who says he is a descendant of King Kaumualii, has lived on 17 acres of land on the Wailua property along with about 25 of his family members.
He said they have a royal patent to stay at the site and are not trespassers.
But Coco Palms co-owner Tyler Greene disagrees. He said the resort has worked with authorities to remove squatters. Greene and a business partner have been trying to restore Coco Palms since 2012.
