A bill that would grant an earned income tax credit on state income taxes is heading to a conference committee at the state Legislature.
The committee will allow leaders of the state Senate and House to sort out differences in versions that passed both chambers or let the bill die.
According to a Senate Ways and Means Committee report, the bill as passed by the Senate provides a credit based on an unspecified percentage of the federal earned income tax credit, which helps low- and middle-income earners.
The measure, House Bill 209, also reduces tax rates for lower income brackets and increases income tax rates for the highest earners, the committee report says. Those changes would be revenue neutral for the state, according to the committee.
