The state Department of Transportation plans to replace two bridges between Pahala and Naalehu.

The $14.9 million project involves building new wider and longer spans to replace the Hilea and Ninole bridges, built in 1940, on Mamalahoa Highway.

The project is estimated to start in mid-2017 and will take 13 months to complete, according to an environmental assessment. Two-lane detours will be available during construction.
