The Big Island Press Club’s annual scholarship dinner is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. April 27 at Hilo’s Seaside Restaurant.
The club’s 2017 scholarship recipients will be honored and Hawaii Community College Chancellor Rachel Solemsaas will be guest speaker.
The Big Island Press Club annually awards scholarships to students pursuing a higher education in journalism, a related field or are engaged in journalism at the collegiate level. The scholarships include the $1,500 Robert C. Miller Memorial Scholarship, $1,000 Bill Arballo Scholarship, $1,000 Marcia Reynolds Scholarship, $600 Yukino Fukubori Memorial Scholarship and the $500 Jack Markey Memorial Scholarship.
Last year, BIPC awarded a total of $4,600 to five Hawaii Island students.
“A key initiative of the Big Island Press Club is to support the next generation of journalists,” said club president Lara Hughes. “We are very proud of being able to support these well-deserving students. Many past recipients of the press club’s scholarships are active and working in journalism throughout Hawaii today.”
Solemsaas arrived at Hawaii Community College after stints at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, Nev., and Bellevue College and Edmunds Community College in Washington state. The colleges are known as “jobs colleges,” providing quality education that meets the workforce needs of the community and forward thinking and responsive approaches to the needs of the community.
Advance dinner reservations are $30 for members, $35 nonmembers (ticket fees apply) with an extra fee of $5 for those who purchase tickets at the door. No-host cocktails will be served and tickets can be purchased through Eventbrite, www.eventbrite.com/e/scholarship-dinner-tickets-33566540426.
