Those pesky errors popped up again to hamper Hawaii’s baseball team.
The Rainbow Warriors made three Friday leading to five unearned runs in a 9-2 loss at UC Riverside.
Alex Fitchett homered for UH (20-12, 2-3 Big West), but Ryan Lillie (1-4) earned his first win of the year for the Highlanders (13-17, 2-6), striking out nine in seven innings.
Dominic DeMiero (4-3) went just three innings, allowing three hits, two runs (one earned) with a walk and three strikeouts, and Jackson Rees was touched for four runs (three earned) in 3 1/3.
Kekai Rios (2 for 4) notched his 11th multihit game of the season, and Dylan Vchulek was 2 for 5.
Hawaii committed nine errors last weekend in losing two of three at Cal Poly. UH will try to avoid a similar series fate in Saturday’s rubber game.
Hitchcock dazzles
Brittany Hitchcock tossed her seventh shutout of the season, scattering four hits with no walks and four strikeouts in Honolulu, and the UH snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory against UC Riverside.
Hitchcock (15-7) did not allow a runner to reach third for the sixth time this season, and the Wahine (24-14, 3-4 Big West) matched their win total from last season.
Angelique Ramos launched her fifth home run of the season in the fourth inning to increase Hawaii’s lead to 2-0. In the second, UH used two errors and hit by Ulu Matagiese and Heather Cameron to plate a run.
The Highlanders (20-16, 2-5) brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but UH turned its second double play to end the game.
