“HULA PELE” WORKSHOP WITH KUMU AB VALENCIA

Details: In celebration of Hilo’s annual Merrie Monarch festival, kumu Ab Valencia offers this hula workshop series. Valencia will teach a hula that pays homage to Pelehonuamea and her home at Kilauea. Learn basic hula steps and hand motions that tell the story of Pele and appropriate costuming and how to make nalei wehiwehi hula (hula adornments). On the last day of class the haumana (students) will make a traditional hula presentation to Pele at Kilauea. Cost is $200 and includes all plant materials for hula adornments. Details: Join community groups, UH-Hilo students and Friends of Lili‘uokalani Gardens in maintenance projects at Hilo’s cultural treasure. Area of concentration this month will be near the red bridge. Wear closed-toe shoes. If you have them, bring gloves and your favorite gardening tools. Some will be pruning trees. Some will be removing ironwood from stone outcroppings. Some will be removing mud from the pond. Refreshments and lunch for all volunteers.

CELEBRATE WORLD HERITAGE DAY WITH A WILDERNESS HIKE
Where: Mauna Ulu Parking Lot, Chain of Craters Road, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Details: Join a ranger-guided hike into Kilauea Volcano’s East Rift Zone wilderness. This challenging 14-mile, seven-hour, round trip interpretive trek includes Makaopuhi Crater, the 1965 and 1969 lava flows, a centuries-old archaeological site, the hapu‘u pulu (fern) processing area and Napau Crater. Hikers must bring 4 liters of water per person, lunch and snacks, sturdy closed-toe shoes or boots, long pants, sunscreen, hat and rain gear. Free.

AARP SHRED FEST: FREE DOCUMENT SHREDDING AND FOOD COLLECTION EVENTS

Details: Public can bring old tax forms, bank statements and other sensitive papers for convenient and confidential on-site destruction. This is a drive-through and drop-off event, with unloading assistance available. Staples and paperclips do not need to be removed. AARP membership is not required. Because of safety concerns and to serve as many people as possible, no one on foot or who gets out of their vehicle will be accepted this year. Each vehicle occupant limited to two boxes or bags of paper material. Participants encouraged to bring donations of brown rice and canned goods to benefit Hawaii’s hungry families. Falsetto singer Kai Ho‘opi‘i performs. A benefits briefing is hosted the first Thursday of each month from 9 a.m.-noon, with several other opportunities for veterans and their family members. Contact the center for more information. Also available are: shore fishing group, kanakapila group, art therapy group, stand-up paddling group, various golf activities, yoga, tai chi and a book club.
