In observance of Earth Month in April, Recycle Hawai‘i is sponsoring several programs to promote recycling and waste reduction activities for a more environmentally sustainable future.
• The Arts &Crafts of UPCycling Project aims to reduce waste going into the landfill through the reuse, re-create, repurpose and reclaim of unwanted materials by upcycling into art, craft, functional or inventive products.
Participants share their original design, assembly, method or technique with a limited use of new materials. Selected entries will appear in a virtual gallery where viewers can vote for the People’s Choice Award.
The project is open to all ages of individuals and schools, families, clubs and organizations on Hawaii Island. Register by Saturday with final entry information and photo due by May 13.
• The Keeping It Green Hawai‘i program recognizes organizations, businesses, schools and agencies for their efforts to address natural resource conservation, “green” practices and preserving the environmental quality of life in Hawaii.
To be considered for a KIGH award, nominees demonstrate how their project exemplifies two or more of the following focus areas: three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) and zero waste; climate change; energy, water and natural resources; green building and sustainable design; native cultural gathering rights and practices; native species; open space, trails and greenways; and sustainable agriculture and food literacy.
Awardees receive a special KIGH decal and certificate for display. Since this program began in 2006-07, more than 50 organizations, schools and businesses in Hawaii have received a KIGH award. Nominee information should be submitted by May 1.
• There will be a Backyard Composting Workshop from 10 a.m.-noon May 6 at Hawai‘i Green Earth Farm in Waimea. Instructors Samantha Robinson and Noah Dodd will cover basic composting principles and techniques ideal for beginners and those wanting a refresher. They also will share information about anaerobic fermentation process or bokashi method.
