WAIMEA — Hawaii Prep was one point away from the end of its season.
But facing match point in the BIIF Division II semifinals against Kohala on Wednesday night, Ka Makani rallied for the final four points, pulling out a five-set victory 26-24, 25-18, 20-25, 21-25, 16-14, advancing to the title game.
The result was much closer than the regular season game between the teams, which Ka Makani won in straight sets against the Cowboys.
With the win, Hawaii Prep also locked up a HHSAA state tournament berth.
Kohala — which was seeking its first state tourney appearance since 2012 — finished the season at 9-6.
Hawaii Prep (10-4) will now face Konawaena, hungry to avenge a five-set loss to the Wildcats earlier this season. However, that blemish on their resume came while missing a handful of key starters. Ka Makani haven’t loss since reeling off six victories in a row entering the title game.
Hawaii Prep last won the DII title in 2015. Konawaena is the defending BIIF champion, winning the school’s first title in the sport since 1998 last year.
