The University of Hawaii at Hilo recognized 48 student-athletes Thursday night at an honors reception, all of whom had a 3.3 accumulative grade point average or higher.

All 12 athletic teams had students honored, with the women’s soccer team leading the way with 11 honorees. The softball team was next with nine.

“Our staff is mindful that events like these help improve the student-athlete experience,” athletic director Pat Guillen said. “Our campus is unique to the entire country, in that we are the only team in the nation that has no choice but to get on a plane for every single road game. Our students are sometimes gone for up to two weeks at a time. It takes great discipline and organization to excel in the classroom like they do.”
