Two men died as a result of separate Kona vehicle crashes that occurred Friday evening, police said.
A 48-year-old was killed when a car heading northbound skidded off Hawaii Belt Road in Captain Cook at about 9:53 p.m. and went down an embankment. He was identified in a police log as Robbie Weeks of Hilo.
No other vehicles were involved and Weeks was dead at the scene, police said.
And a 43-year-old Kona man riding a motorcycle died Saturday at Kona Community Hospital after he collided with a car Friday evening at the corner of Hina Lani and Kamanu streets in Kailua-Kona.
Police didn’t identify either the motorcyclist or the driver, but a police log indicates a negligent homicide investigation has been opened.
It’s unknown at this time if speed or alcohol were factors in either collision.
The deaths are the eighth and ninth official traffic fatalities on the year.
There are also three vehicle-related deaths this year that aren’t counted by police toward the official total because two occurred on private property and the other in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
