Lotus Buss and Nicole Gour headline the cast of “The Miracle Worker,” the next production of Aloha Performing Arts Company presented May 5-21, with Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m., at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu.
Buss and Gour will play Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan, respectively, in this classic American drama by William Gibson. Janice Blaber and Dan Hoff will portray Helen’s parents, Kate and Arthur Keller.
Other family members are James, played by Stephen Alves, and Aunt Ev, played by Ellen Farnsworth. The cast also includes Yasir Bey as Mr. Anagnos, Bill Linaker as the doctor, Renee Monell as Viney, Ella Prado as Martha, Miles Prado as Percy and Caiden Mireles as the ghost of Annie’s brother.
Jerry Tracy is directing, assisted by Felicity Johnson. Producers are Karen Barry and Joel Michaelson. Other crew members include Martha Stephens, set designer; Judith Tringali and Anne Waugh, costumers; Tiffany Kutsunai, lighting designer; Michael Linnett, lighting operator; Lisa Week, properties manager; Juanita Finkenberg, movement director; Nora Judd, stage manager, Victor Lugo, master builder; and Rich Bickel, technical director.
The moving, fact-based drama is set in Alabama in the late 1880s and tells the story of a pivotal time in the development of Keller, who became deaf and blind as an infant. Her parents hire Sullivan as Helen’s teacher, and the two begin as adversaries but end up as lifetime friends.
The climax of the show, the “miracle,” comes when Keller has a life-changing breakthrough and finally discovers that words correspond with specific things, and everything has a name. In the last scene, she actually begins to speak.
This family-friendly show is appropriate for all ages, and will feature Sheree Matheson, a registered American Sign Language interpreter, signing the May 7 performance.
