KAILUA-KONA — A Kalapana woman was cited for graffiti damage in the Mauna Kea Ice Age Reserve.

Hope Cermelj, who ran unsuccessfully for the state House District 4 seat in 2012, was cited for prohibited activities within a natural area reserve after graffiti was discovered in several places atop the mountain on April 28.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement identified Cermelj thanks to tips, as well as assistance from the Native Hawaiian community.

Along with the defaced rocks along the Mauna Kea Access Road, Mauna Kea property managed by the University of Hawaii, including a portable bathroom and parking stall, also was tagged.
