UH-Hilo baseball standout Phillip Steering didn’t just hit .421 last season, he was also prolific in the classroom.
The much-decorated junior first baseman earned another accolade Thursday with a spot on the Academic All-America Division II Baseball third team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The business major from Lake Forest, Calif., carries a 3.64 grade point average and was one of only two players from the Pacific West Conference named to the team. During his junior season, Steering led the PacWest in hitting and on-base percentage (.537). He had 11 doubles, six home runs and drove in 24 runners. Other awards on his wall include third-team all-West Region and second-team all-PacWest.
Surf contest period beckons
The waiting period for the Big Island’s longest-running surf contest starts Saturday and runs through through Oct. 1. Entry to the 33rd annual Quiksilver-Big Island Toyota Big Island Pro-Am Surfing Trials at Honolii Beach Park is $60 if turned in by Friday.
The contest is limited to the first 80 entries and is for Big Island residents only.
More than $3,000 in prizes are at stake and more than 30 sponsors are on board for the Pro-Am, which serves as a ramp for Big Island surfers and bodyboarders to launch into contests against the world’s best on Oahu’s North Shore.
Ten round trips from Hawaii Island to Oahu plus 10 entries to a Pro-Am event on Oahu will be awarded.
