“That’s something we would consider,” said Environmental Management Director Bill Kucharski.
But first thing’s first.
“We need to get this closed and then we can take a look at future use,” Kucharski said.
The county is seeking approval for a $20 million bond to fund the landfill’s closure. The council voted 9-0 to approve the bond on first reading.
Environmental Management is working with a consultant to develop a closure plan and environmental assessment.
Kucharski and Solid Waste Division chief Greg Goodale told council members they are considering using a synthetic turf to cover the landfill, which is up to 160 feet tall.
Kuchasrki said the liner would cover the equivalent of 300 football fields.
Other materials being considered are a geomembrane covered with clay, soil and/or grass and an evapotranspirative cover.
