Ranger Noah Gomes, center, receives the state Department of Land and Natural Resources Citizen Conservationist Award during a ceremony Friday at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. With Gomes are DLNR First Deputy Director Kekoa Kaluhiwa, left, and DLNR Endangered Forest Bird Field Supervisor Alex Wang. Gomes was awarded for his research that determined the Hawaii creeper was known as ‘alawi. As a result, the Hawaiian Lexicon Committee approved the name ‘alawi for the Hawaii creeper in February.
