Youth can learn ocean safety
The University of Hawaii at Hilo Manowai O Hanakahi program is accepting applications for its Youth Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Training course from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. June 26-30 at a location in Hilo to be announced.
Hawaii Island youth ages 15 and older are encouraged to apply. Applicants interested in marine health, stewardship and related marine careers will be given special consideration. The application deadline is June 23.
The course is made possible through funding from the National Marine Fisheries Service Marine Education and Training Mini Grant program.

Meeting to focus on foster care
Hamakua Baptist Church will host Hanai Hawaii Island, a luncheon conference for church pastors and parishioners from area churches who are interested in increasing foster care and adoption opportunities for Hawaii’s children.
The conference is from noon-3 p.m. June 24 at Hamakua Baptist Church, 35-244 Kihalani Homestead Road in Laupahoehoe. The event is free and lunch will be provided.
In 2016, Hamakua Baptist started Hanai Hamakua, a special mission to support foster and adoptive families in the community. This year’s conference will share Hamakua Baptist’s experience and explore ways in which other churches can start similar mission programs.

Abled Hawaii
Artists event slated
Abled Hawaii Artists is hosting its 10th annual ABA Art Festival from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. July 22 at Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo.
Abled Hawaii Artists celebrates diverse individual abilities and promotes employment in the arts. This is the largest celebration of the Americans with Disabilities Act in Hawaii.
The free all-inclusive event will feature entertainment and performing arts, a free healing arts demonstration, puppet making, recycled art, face and body painting, artist and crafts booths and silent auction.

Green scholarship deadline is July 31
July 31 is the deadline for students to apply for the Hawaii Island Landscape Association’s Vic Paulson Scholarships.
The two $1,000 green industry scholarships are available for students entering or enrolled in college majoring in agriculture or landscape and environmental management.
