The Hawaii Police Department is reminding drivers to be aware when operating your vehicles in parking lots where about 22 percent of traffic accidents occur.

The majority of these accidents occur when vehicles are backing up. Another cause is drivers rushing to get to an parking space. Inattention increases during these periods.

Drivers should check their surroundings carefully before reversing and be aware of pedestrians going to and from other vehicles. Vehicles entering parking areas should proceed slowly and be alert to reversing vehicles and pedestrians in the area.

Pedestrians should also use caution, especially when accompanied by children.

By being vigilant, motorists can reduce accidents and injuries, police said.
