Much-needed cleanse

Much-needed cleanse

Please take heart: What American politics is going through right now is a necessary, though unpleasant, part of our nation’s protective system of government, which is not unlike the body’s protective systems. It will be good for us in the long run.

In this case, America has been building up “social and political toxins,” to follow the metaphor, and we now have a clear and growing feeling of nausea.

What will follow is not unlike the stages leading up to the body purging itself of the toxins.

If Congress does what it should, we will get our political stomach pumped; i.e., we will remove the offending individuals from office, wipe our mouths, excuse ourselves to our international friends for our illness and move on with life as it was before (remember life as it was before?).

If Congress does not do what it should, then a much broader purge is necessary, as we “vomit” out the offenders in the administration and also in the two political parties that did nothing to help the cleanse take place. This is the messier option, and no doubt many of the Republican Party are at risk of being whisked out in the cleanse, but so, too, are those Democrats who decide to turn a blind eye to career-ending political offenses by Donald Trump, et al, in the name of just trying to get along.

So, it is largely up to the Republicans to decide how far our toxins are allowed to build up before a stomach pump is agreed on or vomiting becomes necessary.

Once the American system is cleansed of these toxic influences, we need to learn our lesson and be more careful in the future. We might see a Elizabeth Warren/Al Franken team take over, and finally smarter government prevail, perhaps for some time. We can only hope!
