The case of a 21-year-old Puna man facing eight felony charges and a misdemeanor for an alleged automobile break-in and three alleged vehicle thefts will go to Hilo Circuit Court for possible trial.
County Prosecutor Mitch Roth told Hilo District Judge Harry Freitas on Tuesday that Keanu Kaikala Krause was information charged with unauthorized entry to a motor vehicle, third-degree theft and three counts each of unauthorized control of a stolen vehicle and second-degree theft.
Roth said the judge who signed off on the charges set Krause’s bail at $94,000.
The information charges would have preempted a preliminary hearing set for Tuesday but the warrant hadn’t yet been served. Freitas rescheduled the hearing for 2 p.m. today, but it won’t take place if Krause is served with the warrant by then, which is almost certain to happen.
Krause also faces charges of burglary and fourth-degree theft in an unrelated case from August, and is scheduled for a July 6 preliminary hearing on those charges in Hilo District Court.
He remains in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
