Hawaii Volcanoes National Park’s Pu‘u Pua‘i overlook is reopen following a closure to protect breeding nene.
“During the closure, the nene parents successfully raised their single gosling and the family has now moved on to their summer grounds,” the park announced Monday.
Only 30 nene lived statewide in 1952. Today, more than 250 wild birds thrive in the park and there are more than 2,500 nene statewide.
The Kilauea Iki crater overlook deck also was repaired during the closure.
