The deadline for vehicle registrations and drivers license renewals has been extended from June 30 to July 7 after a mainframe computer failure.
The Hawaii County Vehicle Registration and Licensing Division lost the ability to process requests because of technology that serves all state Department of Motor Vehicle offices.
The county finance department “wants to assure the public that they will not be penalized,” says a Wednesday statement from Hawaii County.
Vehicle registration renewal, payment and a safety inspection copy can be left with workers, who will process once the system reboots.
Officials are unsure how long repairs will take while relying “on Honolulu to resolve the problem.”
Officials apologized for the inconvenience the outage has caused.
