Oprah speaks about healthy, happy living
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — Oprah Winfrey recently spoke to Hawaii residents during a special appearance called “Live Your Best Life.”
An estimated 6,000 residents turned out to hear Winfrey speak Monday at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.
The event was designed to inspire the public to live healthier and happier lives.
Winfrey spoke for about an hour and 15 minutes, discussing how she tries to inspire young girls to make a difference and how guests of her show also inspired her to reach out to more people.
Winfrey brought up conversations she had with pop star Beyonce and Maya Angelou as women who made an impact by their words.
Man who disrupted flight gets probation
HONOLULU (AP) — A man whose disruptive behavior prompted a New York City-bound flight to return to Honolulu was sentenced Monday to three years of probation.
James August pleaded guilty in February to interfering with a flight crew. He said he doesn’t remember what happened, but he doesn’t dispute accounts that he was threatening and disruptive.
He was arrested after the November Hawaiian Airlines flight returned to Honolulu. Court documents say a drunken August threatened to kill his girlfriend, her children, passengers and crew members.
An FBI affidavit filed after his arrest says he slapped a female flight attendant’s shoulder.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Tom Brady says the airline is requesting more than $110,000 in restitution for the costs of turning the plane around.
Brady said that request will be addressed during a July 24 hearing.
