Wong doubles in Double-A

In his first game action in three weeks, Kolten Wong went 2 for 3 with a double Wednesday to start a rehabilitation assignment with the Double-A Springfield Cardinals.

Wong, on the disabled list with a triceps strain, said he expects to be in Springfield for five days, according to Tribune-News Service.

Wong hopes to rejoin the St. Louis Cardinals after the All-Star break.

Volcano Soccer tourney to start

The Big Island Candies Volcano International Soccer Tournament kicks off Thursday at Hilo Bayfront with a soccerfest and skills challenge from noon to four.

Matches in Under-10, U12, U14 and U19 run Friday and Saturday with semifinals, finals and consolation play on Sunday.

According to a release, “The tournament is one-of-a-kind in the State of Hawaii as it is an (American Youth Soccer Association) tournament that is open to all teams from club or AYSO. All teams do, however, have to follow league guidelines that guarantee playing time for all and good sportsmanship above all.”

Soccer camp at Bayfront

Deft Touch Soccer Center is holding a camp July 19-22 at Hilo Bayfront for ages 7 to 14.

Camp director Trey Sharlin is owner of DTSC in Los Alamitos, Calif., and he’s a former assistant to the Philippine national women’s team.

According to a release, “The camp will feature specially designed programs developed using the same philosophy and exercises used by the top youth clubs in the world.”

Ages 7-9 will camp from 9-11 a.m. at a cost of $90.

Ages 10-14 will camp from noon-3 p.m. at a cost of $125.

A 20 percent discount is available for groups of 10 or more.

Waiakea air riflery tryouts

The Waiakea High School air riflery team will hold tryouts for all interested students for the 2017 season at the school gym at 6:15 p.m. from July 31-Aug. 3.

Students must have a 2017-2018 Waiakea physical and the following: safety glasses, long pants/jeans, covered shoes and either a long sleeved shirt or jacket.

A 12-and-under organized team is seeking players for the Parks and Recreation season, which runs August through September. For 12-year-olds, players’ birthdays must come after Sept. 1

Tourney honors cancer fight

The fourth annual Battling for Cancer Softball Tournament will be held Aug. 26-27 at Walter Victor Stadium.

The entry fee is $200, and teams must provide their own 14-inch softballs.
