The College of Continuing Education and Community Service at the University of Hawaii at Hilo is offering beekeeping and basic computer skills workshops in July and August.
• Benefits of Beekeeping, Part 1 will cover bee biology, Hawaiian honeybee history, introduction to treatment-free beekeeping, pests and diseases, and pollination. The field day gives participants an opportunity to visit a thriving apiary, observe effective hive management techniques and to develop their relationship with bees.
Classes are from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, July 11-25, in UH-Hilo’s College Hall Room 6. There will be a field day from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. July 29 at Paradise Nectar Apiaries in Kapoho. The cost is $90 and includes the required textbook.
In Part 2, participants will expand their understanding of bee behavior and get invaluable hands-on experience in handling bees.
Classes are from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Aug. 1-15, in UH-Hilo’s College Hall Room 6. There will be a field day from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 19 at Paradise Nectar Apiaries. The cost is $90 and includes the required textbook.
Instructor Jen Rasmussen has been caring for honeybees on Hawaii Island since 2008. She has developed various methods of maintaining her hives without the use of chemicals or treatments.
• Basic Computer Skills Training for the PC, Part 1 is designed for those who are new to computers or brushing up on their skills to help find employment.
The introductory workshop on basic computer skills classes are from 4:30-6:30 p.m. July 10, 12, 14 and 17 in UH-Hilo’s PB-7 (Computer Lab). Tuition is $75.
Evan Clark has taught technology classes to adults for more than 10 years. He will cover a wide range of basic operations, including mouse navigation, opening and closing windows, powering on and off, accessing the internet, saving files, setting up an email account, and transferring photos from a camera to a computer hard drive.
