Hilo golfers at IMG tourney in San Diego
Hilo’s Lacey Uchida was tied for 58th place after the first round at the IMG Academy Junior World Championships.
The Waiakea freshman shot a 10-over 80-74—154 total Wednesday at The Country Club of Rancho Bernardo in San Diego.
She’s 18 shots behind first-round leader Jingfan Deng, of China, who’s 8-under with a 136 total.
Hilo’s Pono Yanagi is tied for 99th place after he fired a 9-over 77-76—153 total in the boys 15-18 division.
The Kamehameha junior is 14 strokes behind first-round leader Devondeep Bling, of California, who’s at 5-under 139.
Hilo’s Dysen Park is tied for 53rd place after he fired a 5-over 71-78—149 total in the boys 11-12 division.
The seventh grader is 14 shots back of first-round leaders Kush Arora, of California, who’s at 9-under 135 with San Jose’s Anton Ouyang.
Hilo’s Jake Otani is 109th after he shot a 35-over 85-94—179 total in the boys 9-10 division.
The fifth grader is 39 shots back of first-rounder leader Ratchanon Chantanauwat, of Thailand, who’s at 4-under 140.
Jaehn third at HSJA
Waimea’s Ethan Jaehn placed third in the boys 13-14 age division at the Hawaii State Junior Association’s All Ages Junior Tour Series.
The eighth grader finished at 22-over for an 84-82—166 two-round total on Wednesday at Honolulu Country Club on Oahu.
There were 61 junior from across Hawaii who competed in the 36-stroke play competition for various age groups.
Jaehn was the only golfer from the Big Island.
Iosia on U.S. juniors
UH-Manoa’s Norene Iosia has been named to the 12-player U.S. Women’s Junior National Team and will compete at the FIVB Volleyball U20 World Championship in Boca del Rio and Cordoba, Mexico.
The World Championship event will be held from July 14-23. The U.S. qualified for the World Championship by winning gold at the 2017 Women’s U20 Pan American Cup in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Iosia will be a sophomore for the Rainbow Wahine this upcoming season. She and MacKenziWelsh (Michigan) were the two setters selected to the squad after being chosen from the 16-player training group from July 2-11 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Last season as a freshman, Iosia was named to both the All-Big West First Team and to the All-Freshman Team while also earning UH Manoa Scholar Athlete Honors in the classroom.
Hilo High air riflery
The Hilo High air riflery team will hold tryouts Tuesday, July 25 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the school’s cafeteria.

Bayfront soccer camp
Deft Touch Soccer Center is holding a camp July 19-22 at Amauulu Field for ages 7 to 14.
Camp director Trey Sharlin is owner of DTSC in Los Alamitos, Calif., and he’s a former assistant to the Philippine national women’s team.
According to a release, “The camp will feature specially designed programs developed using the same philosophy and exercises used by the top youth clubs in the world.”
Current or former college players and coaches will assist Coach Trey. Players will train in skill appropriate groups at basic or advanced levels.
Ages 7-9 will camp from 9-11 a.m. at a cost of $90.
Ages 10-14 will camp from noon-3 p.m. at a cost of $125.
A 20 percent discount is available for groups of 10 or more.
Players must bring ball, shoes, shin guards and water.

UHH volleyball clinic
A volleyball clinic for boys and girls ages 12-18 will be held on Sundays in July featuring UH-Hilo volleyball coach Gene Krieger and Poli Olevao-Kahapea, head coach and founder of A Mother’s Prayer Volleyball Club and a UH-Hilo alumnae.
The fee is $40 per day, with check-in at 12:30 p.m. and clinics running 1-4 p.m. on July 16, 23 and 30 at UH-Hilo gym. Coaches will cover different aspects of volleyball during each session.
