Fire investigators locate unit where blaze started
HONOLULU (AP) — Fire investigators determined where a deadly blaze began in a Honolulu high-rise apartment building, but they’re still working to identify the cause.
Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins said Monday the origin of the fire was unit 2602. He said it’s across the hall from units where bodies of two women and a man were found.
Jenkins said investigators will determine exactly where in the unit Friday’s fire started and what caused it.
The Marco Polo building was constructed in 1971, before fire sprinklers were required in high-rises. Fire officials say sprinklers would have prevented flames from spreading.
Jenkins said it’s one of the worst fires in modern Honolulu history.
Some residents say they had trouble hearing sirens and didn’t realize there was fire raging until opening their doors.
Brooks offers free honeymoon in Hawaii for couple
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Garth Brooks says he’ll pony up for a honeymoon in Hawaii for a Texas couple who got engaged during his concert in Oklahoma City.
Drew Bargsley proposed to Chelsea Townsend while Brooks was playing his hit “Unanswered Prayers” on Saturday night.
The singer got wind of the commotion and asked the Dallas-area couple about their honeymoon plans from the stage.
He told them he and his wife, Trisha Yearwood, will pay for their honeymoon if they decide to go to Hawaii.
Brooks later told Yearwood about his offer and she agreed, but added, “Nobody else can get engaged tonight.”
