KAILUA-KONA — Police are looking for a 37-year-old man wanted in connection with a reported attempted murder incident in Ka‘u that resulted in one man being injured, authorities said Tuesday.
The alleged assault occurred Monday when two men traveling in a car in the area of Wood Valley in Pahala got into an altercation.
Nathan Cakin is wanted in connection with the incident.
Authorities identified the men as acquaintances and the only occupants in the vehicle at the time of the alleged assault, said Hawaii Police Department Lt. Sherry Bird.
The passenger, a 38-year-old Ka‘u man, told police he was assaulted while in the vehicle. Once the vehicle came to a stop, the suspect, identified as the driver, brandished a firearm and one gunshot was fired, according to police.
“The suspect assaulted the victim with the firearm and then used an edged weapon to continue the assault,” says a police statement.
Officials say the victim fled the area on foot and was treated and released from a hospital for injuries he suffered in the alleged attack.
Bird said the victim had lacerations about his body.
Cakin is described as Filipino, 5 feet 9 inches tall, 220 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Police say he might be in possession of a firearm and should be considered dangerous.
Anyone with information about Cakin’s whereabouts is asked to call the Police Department’s nonemergency number at 935-3311 or Detective Dominic Uyetake at 326-4646, ext. 228, or via email at dominic.uyetake@hawaiicounty.gov. Those who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.
