Love the tangy spiciness of kimchi but have never been able to replicate that signature flavor yourself?

Love the tangy spiciness of kimchi but have never been able to replicate that signature flavor yourself?

Now you can learn how to create your own traditional Korean-style kimchi during the Kimchi Making Workshop from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. July 29 at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.

Aaron and Soohee Martinson will deliver an informative classroom-style workshop while simultaneously delivering fun, hands-on cooking instructions. Soohee adds a narrative to the recipes by sprinkling in anecdotes while Aaron presents visual learners with a slide show every step of the way.

By the end of the class, students will have what it takes to make fresh kimchi at home.

This course will give students an introduction to the techniques used to make traditional Korean kimchi. The recipe for the Napa cabbage kimchi is from the Jeolla provinces of South Korea and are recipes used every day at Soonie Nae Restaurant in Seoul, South Korea.

Students will be able to take home their kimchi to continue fermenting it to their preferred taste. All of the materials needed to prepare the kimchi will be provided.

Students are recommended to bring an apron, as preparing kimchi can be messy and pepper pastes will stain clothing.

Class fee is $55 or $50 for VAC members plus a $15 supply fee. Advance registration is required. To register, call the center at 967-8222 or visit www.volcanoartcenter.org.
